As an invitation to a joint rethinking of cultural institutions models which could resist corporate logic, populistic concept of public sphere, identitarian cultural politics and pressures of censorship and auto-censorship, this seminar considers the issues of institutional models and art infrastructure in the context of responsibility, beyond simple divisions such as ‘inside’ and ‘outside’.
Through the activities of independent and experimental, artistic and (inter)cultural institutions and different initiatives and platforms, the seminar selects several intertwined themes dedicated to the possibilities of engagement, strategic retreat and boycott; activities in highly adversary ideological, political and material circumstances, monetization of culture; precarity and flexible conditions of cultural production; building of new institutional practices and reconfiguration of existing relations but also positioning of institutions towards the wider public and local communities.
On the one hand, spectacular mega-institutions keep growing, while on the other, small and middle-sized institutions face a drastic reduction of working conditions turning their activities into pure preservation of basic resources. In order to avoid the traps of perpetuating existing conditions and asking ourselves what the are institutions today in the first place, together with invoking the original meaning of the notion institutum – Latin for purposeful and planned protocols this seminar realizes itself as a space for a pause where we want to ask ourselves and others basic questions about what and how we are working when we are engaged in artistic and cultural activities.
