This intervention can be read in different ways – as an interpolation, a student workshop, or an exhibition within an exhibition that emerged from conversations between WHW and David Maljković about the permanent exhibition of the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb and WHW’s temporary exhibition At the End of the Small Hours situated within the museum’s permanent exhibition. Maljković invited his MA Painting students – Lana Cvetko, Paula Dunatov, Leonarda Fofić, Marta Milinović, Ana Šimunović, and Iva Žepina – to participate in WHW’s project in order to situate the work of the youngest generation of women artists in the context of Croatian museums and the exhibition itself, but also to open up for us, as curators, the possibility of a different encounter with our own methodology and the ways we integrate artworks into an exhibition. The artists were not invited to respond directly to the museum’s collection or to the works that were part of the exhibition At the End of the Small Hours, but rather to actively and critically reflect on the positioning of their artistic education and their work in the present moment and within the institutional art system in Zagreb and beyond. Nevertheless, all of them have conceived and produced new works for specific locations and situations within the museum’s permanent exhibition that they found compelling, and in one way or another all of the works address the contradictions that arise from the intersection of traditional and contemporary context and identity.
