We are pleased to present a screening of works by Belinda Kazeem-Kami\u0144ski<\/strong>, a Vienna-based visual artist, writer, and research-based practitioner whose work engages with the poetics of the African diaspora via video installation, sound, and performance. The program features her most recent body of work, inspired by the story of Asue*, Gambra*, and Schiama*\u2014three African girls abducted by an Italian priest and brought to the Ursuline convent in Bruneck in 1855\u2014currently at the center of her solo exhibition Aerolectics<\/i> at Kunst Meran. Across video installation, ceramics, and text, these works develop resonant vocabularies for engaging with dislocation, Christian missionary practices, and embodied memory.<\/p>\n

The presentation will also include earlier works, drawing out throughlines in Kazeem-Kami\u0144ski\u2019s practice\u2014such as her engagement with fractured temporalities, scopic regimes, and otherization. Framed within this year\u2019s curatorial focus on migration, border imaginaries, and new aesthetic languages of resistance, Kazeem-Kami\u0144ski\u2019s work offers an intimate engagement with the psychic and material dimensions of displacement. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the artist, inviting space for exchange and collective reflection.
\nThis event is part of WHW’s multiyear program titled Remember Freedom<\/i><\/strong>, which examines the notion of poetry and borders in relation to the stifling of freedom of speech within liberal democracies.<\/p>\n

The Letter (2019) \u00a9 Belinda Kazeem-Kamin\u0301ski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Belinda Kazeem-Kami\u0144ski<\/strong>\u2019s artistic practice is dedicated to unearthing the remnants of Black presence within European archives. It unfolds across photography, video installations, performance, and text, manifesting in layered encounters with history and memory. Rooted in Black feminist theory, her research-driven and process-oriented practice interrogates the conditions of Black life in the African diaspora. Moving fluidly between documentary and speculation, she crafts immersive narratives that collapse linear time and rigid spatial boundaries. Her practice is one of composing\u2014bringing together people, histories, and contexts, weaving dialogues across disciplines, and fostering exchange through collaborations with artists and thinkers.<\/p>\n

Belinda Kazeem-Kami\u0144ski<\/strong> has exhibited internationally at such venues as La Ferme du Buisson, IMMA, Art X Lagos, Liverpool Biennial, Camera Austria Graz, Kunsthalle Wien, Les Rencontres d\u2019Arles, and Phileas \u2013 The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art. Screenings of her video work have been presented at esteemed film festivals like the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Diagonale, the Vancouver International Film Festival, and the Frauen.Film.Fest Dortmund. Her awards include the Art X Prize Africa Diaspora, the Otto Mauer Prize 2023, the Camera Austria Award 2021, and the Theodor K\u00f6rner Prize for Art. Her first monograph, H(a)untings \/ Heim-Suchungen<\/i>, was published by Sternberg Press in 2023.<\/p>\n

The screening by Belinda Kazeem-Kami\u0144ski is part of the Remember Freedom<\/em> film and video program.<\/p>\n
