The notion of \u201cProgress\u201d brings with it the well-intended belief that everything must eventually get better. When we speak of an evolution based on \u201csurvival of the fittest,\u201d we tend to project a happy-ending humanitarianism onto those \u201cfittest,\u201d not imagining that the qualities that might make one species dominant over another may not necessarily be the most community-minded.<\/p>\n
We are currently experiencing a moment where society appears to be in retrograde, slipping backwards after several decades of presumed progress. In this series of lectures, hosted by Zagreb-based writer and curator Kate Sutton, guest speakers will offer creative insight into the political, economical and evolutionary state in which we currently find ourselves.<\/p>\n
Kate Sutton<\/strong> is a writer, currently based in Zagreb, Croatia, after nearly a decade in Russia, where she served as curator of the non-profit art space Baibakov Art Projects. In addition to writing articles and reviews for magazines including Artforum, Bidoun, frieze, Ibraaz<\/em> and LEAP<\/em>, Sutton is a regular contributor to Artforum.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n 05\/06\/2017 at 8 pm For the inaugural lecture-performance, on June 5, artist Tyler Coburn<\/strong> will introduce his ongoing project, Ergonomic Futures<\/em>. This multidisciplinary initiative imagines what impact future evolution will have on our understanding of what it means to be human, and, conversely, what it means to deviate from that definition.<\/p>\n Tyler Coburn<\/strong> is an artist and writer based in New York. Featured in both the 11th Gwangju Biennale and the 10th Shanghai Biennale, Coburn\u2019s work has also been presented at South London Gallery; Kunstverein Munich; Kunsthalle Wien; CCA Glasgow; Western Front, Vancouver; Grazer Kunstverein; UCCA, Beijing; and Sculpture Center, New York. His writing has appeared in e-flux journal, frieze, Dis, Mousse<\/em>, and Rhizome<\/em>.<\/p>\n 13\/06\/2017 at 8 pm On June 13, critic Adam Kleinman<\/strong> will treat audiences to Trump l\u2019oeil, a lecture that follows up on Coburn\u2019s dialectic of \u201cnormativity\u201d and \u201cdeviance\u201d to question structures of mind control, from brainwashing to memes.<\/p>\n Adam Kleinman<\/strong> is a largely-itinerant writer, curator, educator, and sometime performer. He is editor-in-chief and adjunct curator at Witte de With, Rotterdam, and a frequent contributor to multiple books and magazines including Agenda, Artforum, e-flux journal, frieze, Mousse<\/em>, and Texte zur Kunst<\/em>.<\/p>\n Each lecture will be followed by a conversation with Kate Sutton, and a period for questions from the audiences.
