Shadow citizens"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"text\" data-shid=\"\">\n<p><em>Shadow Citizens&nbsp;<\/em>offers an insight into the radical film praxis and extensive \u0153uvre of filmmaker&nbsp;<strong>\u017delimir \u017dilnik<\/strong>&nbsp;(b. 1942, lives and works in Novi Sad, Serbia) within an exhibition context.<\/p>\n<p>From his beginnings in the lively amateur film scene of Yugoslavia in the 1960s, \u017dilnik has gone on to make more than fifty films, including a number of feature films and TV productions, often in the genre of docudrama. He received international recognition early on, winning the Golden Bear for the Best Film at the 1969 Berlin International Film Festival for&nbsp;<em>Early Works<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of \u017dilnik\u2019s films have prophetically anticipated real-world events such as the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the economic transition from socialism to a neoliberal order, the elimination of workers\u2019 rights, and the wider social erosion related to labor and migration. The exhibition\u2019s title,&nbsp;<em>Shadow Citizens<\/em>, reflects \u017dilnik\u2019s lifelong focus on invisible, suppressed, and under- and misrepresented members of society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text\" data-shid=\"\">\n<p><em>Shadow Citizens&nbsp;<\/em>includes \u017dilnik\u2019s iconic shorts from the beginning of his career, as well as feature films, film excerpts, and documentary material, thus covering \u017dilnik\u2019s entire \u0153uvre and its critical and public reception over the years. It also features rarely screened films and material, such as&nbsp;<em>Public Execution<\/em>&nbsp;(1974), shot in Germany, and a TV reportage on&nbsp;<em>The<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Gastarbeiter Opera<\/em>&nbsp;(1977), \u017dilnik\u2019s only theater play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shorts<\/strong>:&nbsp;<em>Newsreel on Village Youth, in Winter<\/em>&nbsp;(1967);&nbsp;<em>The Unemployed&nbsp;<\/em>(1968);&nbsp;<em>Little Pioneers&nbsp;<\/em>(1968);&nbsp;<em>June Turmoil&nbsp;<\/em>(1969);&nbsp;<em>Black Film&nbsp;<\/em>(1971);&nbsp;<em>Uprising in Jazak&nbsp;<\/em>(1973);&nbsp;<em>Public Execution&nbsp;<\/em>(1974);&nbsp;<em>I Don\u2019t Know What That Should Mean&nbsp;<\/em>(1975);&nbsp;<em>Inventory&nbsp;<\/em>(1975).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feature films<\/strong>:&nbsp;<em>Early Works&nbsp;<\/em>(1969);&nbsp;<em>Paradise. Visit again, as often as you wish \u2013 your&nbsp;<strong>admission ticket is valid for the entire duration<\/strong>&nbsp;of the exhibition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text\" data-shid=\"\">\n<p>The exhibition also presents a line of research curated by&nbsp;<strong>Ana Janevski&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>that<\/strong>&nbsp;focuses on the context within which \u017dilnik got his start: the amateur cine clubs that existed in many cities in Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, film curator&nbsp;<strong>Jurij Meden<\/strong>, in close collaboration with the artist, has created the film essay&nbsp;<em>\u017delimir \u017dilnik: The Films in My Life<\/em>, which reflects on the ways in which \u017dilnik\u2019s works intersect with wider film history.<\/p>\n<p>This exhibition is an expanded version of a show WHW curated previously in&nbsp;<strong>Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art<\/strong>&nbsp;in Oldenburg and&nbsp;<strong>Gallery Nova<\/strong>&nbsp;in Zagreb. The most recent feature film \u017dilnik made was shot in Vienna.
