Publication Shadow Citizen. Želimir Žilnik, is the result of the 2018 exhibition curated by WHW at the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art in Oldenburg. The publication provides an insight into the radical film practice of Želimir Žilnik. Since his beginnings on the amateur film scene of Yugoslavia in the 1960s, Žilnik has made more than fifty films dealing with social problems, the theme of gastarbeiters, the hardships of the post-socialist transition and migration. The term “shadow citizen” refers to different minorities, and Žilnik sees it as the possibility of imagining a new concept of citizenship, which goes beyond the existing restrictions and borders.
